Japan Airlines bankrupt: massive restructuring underway
Tuesday, January 19, 2010 at 11:19AM Japan Airlines Corp filed for bankruptcy protection in Tokyo and New York today, citing terrorism, SARS and war in Iraq as contributing causes to its demise.
The airline, which has posted annual losses in the billions for the past ten years and has been bailed out by the Japanese government four times, owes more than US$25 billion. It will have to cut more than fifteen thousand jobs to help it survive. Asia's largest airline by revenue, JAL will continue to fly as it restructures, with US$11 billion in support from the government's Enterprise Turnaround Initiative Corp of Japan (ETIC).
As part of the restructuring, thirty-one international and domestic routes will be cut. It will also replace all of its B747-400 jets and MD90s with smaller, more fuel-efficient ones, to be provided by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Observers say that the airline needs to refocus on core business and improve efficiency in order to return to profitability.
The airline's debt makes it the fourth largest bankruptcy ever in Japan. Shares of JAL have fallen more than 90% since the New Year and will be delisted from the Tokyo stock exchange on Feb. 20, wiping out investors in the company. The company's market value has dwindled to barely US$150 million.
JAL, founded in 1951, flies 1,100 flights a day to 220 airports in 35 countries and 59 domestic routes.
