Bombardier opens new aircraft maintenance facilities in the US, Europe

Bombardier Aerospace has added a third commercial aircraft service centre in the United States, in Macon, Georgia. The nearly 100,000 square foot facility will serve Atlantic Southeast Airlines (ASA) exclusively and will be capable of handling up to six aircraft at a time. ASA has a fleet of 150 Bombardier CRJ aircraft including CRJ100/200/700/900 models. The new facility will be equipped to perform C checks on the aircraft, the second heaviest maintenance check that aircraft undergo, performed every twelve to eighteen months or after a manufacturer-specified number of flying hours.

A new maintenance facility for business aircraft will also begin operating iat Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport in the first quarter of 2010. This will bring the number of Bombardier-operated service centres to eight worldwide.

Bombardier's CRJ regional jet series dates to the late 1980s when the Canadair Regional Jet pioneered the 50-seat jet class. It launched its first development aircraft in 1991, followed by an augmented version, the CRJ200 in 1995.

The CRJ700 is the 70–78-seat version of the regional jet family while the CRJ900 has 86 seats. A new member of the family, the 100-seat CRJ1000, made its maiden flight in September, 2008. More than 1500 of Bombardier's regional jets have been delivered to date, and are operated in thirty-eight countries.

In related news, the Swiss Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA) has approved Swiss Aviation Training (SAT) to provide maintenance type rating training for the Bombardier CRJ aircraft types. This will allow SAT to offer training courses in the maintenance of the CRJ aircraft, adding to the range of training approvals it now provides. SAT's first customer for Bombardier  is Luthansa Technik of Stuttgart, Germany.
